Words really do not do justice to the show John Mayer put on last night.
I've never seen someone put so much into a show - and at the same time, get so much back. (Really, I'm getting goosebumps as I type this.) He came on stage and everyone there started cheering immediately. Opening with 'Why Georgia' was surprising, because it's been appearing later on the setlist. It was my second favorite part of the night. Everyone just yelled the 'so what if I've got a smile on, it's hiding the quiet superstitions in my head' part, and John had the biggest smile on his face. After that he went into 'My Stupid Mouth'... it's somewhat of a blur after that, I was having so much fun. He made a comment early in the night, this isn't word for word, but almost... "y'know, what if it was all over tomorrow?... if no one wanted to hear my music anymore... I know I could still come play in Chicago..." The crowd cheered SO loud. Chicago loves John :-)
Here's what I remember of the set list, I know I have them all listed, just not in the right order...
Why Georgia
My Stupid Mouth
Something's Missing
83
Your Body is a Wonderland
Not Myself
Bigger Than My Body
Come Back to Bed (more on this particular song later)
3x5
No Such Thing
**encore**
Daughters
Back to You
'83' got a great reaction from the crowd. I'm pretty sure girls who hadn't even been born yet had on homemade shirts with "83" on the back and lyrics on it. He threw a little 'Girls Just Wanna Have Fun' into it, which again - I'm sure those girls were clueless. 'Your Body is a Wonderland' of course got the crowd all wired and everyone was singing and having fun with it. He covered part of another song towards the end of it, but I'm not sure what it was. Something's Missing was amazing... I've loved this song since I first heard it and hearing it live makes it 10 times more special now.
'Come Back to Bed' (my absolute favorite part of the night) deserves its own paragraph... hell, the way he played during this song, John deserves a novel. I've liked this song since I downloaded it off of This Desire. John however, took FULL advantage of being in Chicago and gave a new meaning to the definition of 'blues' by playing about a 5 minute solo in the middle of the song. He said he had to do it, since he was in the town where blues started... trust me, no one minded. He thanked Buddy Guy (Chicago guitar LEGEND, who may have actually been there, I couldn't completely understand John because everyone was clapping so loud for Guy) for being an inspiration to him and for just being flat out AMAZING on the guitar. David Ryan Harris was also onstage for this. I really cannot describe in words how mind blowing this part of the show was. At the end he covered a little of the Rolling Stones 'You Can't Always Get What You Want' I'm pretty sure my friend and I were some of the few who picked up on it though, we're huge Stones fans as well. I could go on and on about how wonderful this part of the show was, but unless you were there, it's hard to completely understand.
3x5 was another favorite for me, because it's my favorite song off of Room For Squares. The part where there's a little guitar solo and then he starts singing "...you should have seen that sunrise, with your own eyes", it gets me everytime. 'Not Myself'... it was special. It's a damn good song and it's kinda personal. Everyone can relate to something in it and take something away from it. You can just tell when he plays it that John has a fondness for that song.
I could really continue with this until my fingers hurt from typing and there were no words left to use. I've had goosebumps while writing this entire review. I came into this expecting a great show by an amazing singer/songwriter/and guitarist... I left speechless and in awe of John and the way he plays.
If anyone came into this show questioning his talent, they left without a doubt in their heart or mind.
